Abstract Lidar observation has widely been used for detecting atmospheric aerosols and molecules through the monitoring of backscattering signals. In this review, we describe the fundamental mechanism of the interaction of these atmospheric particles with laser beams propagating through the atmosphere. The basic equations of both Rayleigh scattering of air molecules and Mie scattering of aerosol particles are considered, with attention to the lidar applications. |
